Gifting or Treating?
If you are in the market for last minute ideas, we’ve put together a few rummy suggestions that that we think are either hidden gems or our firm favourites that you really shouldn’t overlook. With so many choices, it was tough to narrow it down and we’d certainly love to hear about any you’d recommend of course, but I don’t think you’ll go too far wrong with these.
The selection is based upon those reasonably freely available here in the UK. The following may and may not be available in outside the UK, but the good news is that stockists like Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange will ship internationally. The links are for Master of Malt as I find them to generally be the best-priced retailer.
The vast majority of the spiced rum market in the UK revolves around the market leaders (which is fine) and they can be found in any supermarket, but what if you’ve a friend or relative who’s bonkers about spiced rum and you want to get them something different?
Chairman’s Reserve Spiced [£20] is sure to please and Foursquare Spiced Rum from Barbados [£22] is an excellent alternative that won’t break the bank, but for a pound more how about the brand new Pusser’s Spiced [£23]? We recently featured the new version of Pink Pigeon [£26] from Mauritius; a delicate spiced rum in comparison to some, but incredibly versatile and makes a fantastic Mauritian Mule*. For a complex spiced rum, then Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s Rumbullion! [£34] probably can’t be beaten and would be our choice (although Elements 8 Spiced [£31] runs it very close) for a balanced and flavoursome profile.
*Mauritian Mule: Fill a tall glass with ice, add a double measure of Pink Pigeon and top with a good quality, fiery ginger beer like Old Jamaica. Squeeze in the juice of half a lime, dropping the spent lime shell on top as garnish. Super refreshing!
