Back when Batch #004 Penny Blue XO was unveiled last July
, we were invited to the official launch at Milroy’s where, as part of the presentation the team indicated that a Single Cask offering was going to be made. Kinda feels a little earlier than planned but true as their word – Cask #28 has now been revealed to the world!
Press Release: The Indian Ocean Company and Berry Bros. & Rudd Spirits are delighted to announce the release of a rare single cask bottling of Penny Blue Mauritian Rum from the Medine Distillery, highlighting the first single cask sold outside Mauritius. Back in August the first Penny Blue Single Cask was released exclusively in Mauritius.
Doug McIvor from Berry Bros. & Rudd and Jean-Francois Koenig, Master Distiller at Medine, assessed each cask in the distillery’s reserves before identifying Cask #28, distilled in 2006, deserving to be bottled as a single cask offering and chosen as the first to be released outside Mauritius. Jean-Francois Koenig commented, “We have selected a really exceptional (ex-whisky) cask for this special single cask edition; the rum is rich and luxuriant. We are exceedingly proud of this single cask and are working on new innovations for future releases from the well-received Penny Blue series”
Bottled at 44.8%, only 197 bottles have been released. The bottles will be available exclusively from the Berry Bros. & Rudd shop and at Coe Vintners for £140.
Penny Blue Single Cask #28 Tasting Notes:
Colour: Deep amber
Nose: Deep and inviting with tropical fruit, vanilla, toffee and sandalwood. Complex with zesty citrus.
Palate: Luxuriant and creamy textured with vanilla, spice and balanced oak tannins.
Finish: Rich and lingering.
Age: 9 years old. 2006 Vintage
We Say: for all the reasons we love the Penny Blue range, we love this limited edition release! Whereas previous blends of multiple barrels iron out some of the flavour peaks and troughs that different casks will exhibit, this single cask offering reveals more of the intensity and depth a cask can achieve. It’s a little hotter in the mouth, with perhaps a hint more liquorice type spice. In short – I’d be very happy for a bottle for Christmas, please - Pete
