La Hechicera, a solera aged rum brand from Colombia (and incidentally, a brand we’ve followed since before they launched), has just celebrated its fifth anniversary and can now be found in 25 international markets. However, in order to launch into the highly competitive US market, they have made a few changes to the way that the rum is presented. Now more than ever enthusiasts are asking (demanding?) more clarity and understanding about how rums are produced, meaning the little-understood process of solera ageing is often a focus of discussion and therefore a perfect fit for our next Twitter Tasting!
The brand launched in 2012, with the UK as its first market. Today, La Hechicera celebrates with a new custom glass bottle; their name engraved across the shoulder of the bottle, and a new label emphasizing for the first time its age statement: Solera 21 Reserva Familiar. They hope that this will help consumers better understand La Hechicera’s quality, provenance and family legacy as the only independent rum producer in Colombia.
Co-founder and managing director Miguel Riascos told us, “Our expansion into the North American market is a huge milestone for La Hechicera. Because of this, we believe it is important to emphasize the time and dedication behind our way of making rum by adding 12 to 21 years to our label”
Is it OK to assume an age statement applies to a solera aged rum? Will this move help or hinder understanding? These are all points worthy of discussion of course. Details like this and other aspects of production and rum blending are going to be explored in more detail on the night as we run through a five-sample breakdown of the rums at various stages of development, so we can see how the rum progresses from new-make through ageing, along with decent taster of La Hechicera as well. We’ll be guided by Miguel as he joins us from Barranquilla, Colombia and both he and the rest of the La Hechicera team will be on hand to share the brand history and answer all your questions.
