Press Release: Havana Club Shines a Light On “Cuba Moderna” Through Its 2018 Cocktail Grand Prix
Havana Club is on the hunt for the world’s most talented rum bartenders to take part in the 12th edition of the Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix, the biennial contest that has been reimagined to share Cuba’s burgeoning revolution in food, technology and culture with the world.
The 2018 competition, entitled ‘Cuba Moderna’, challenges entrants to translate contemporary Cuba into an original cocktail that is simple and replicable, while staying true to authentic Cuban ingredients, bartending techniques and culture.
Set against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving nation, through the growth of tourism and private business, increased access to the Internet and the globalisation of Cuban music and art, the competition is set to shine a global spotlight on the dynamic, forward-thinking atmosphere in Cuba – and emerging ways of drinking authentic Cuban rum – through the winning serve.
The Havana Club Cocktail Competition Grand Prix 2018 has a fresh new format that puts the bartender centre stage throughout the process, beginning with local competitions in more than 40 countries that task entrants to craft a new rum cocktail that mixes ‘Cuba Moderna’ with their own local culture.
The winner from each country will jet off to Havana from 28th May-2nd June for the global finale, where they will be joined by a wildcard entrant selected through a competition on the Havana Club Grand Prix Facebook page. Launching on February 1st, 2018, the winner will be announced in March.
In Cuba, finalists will experience Cuba Moderna firsthand through visits to Havana’s best new private bars and restaurants, known as paladares, and performances from rising stars in the Cuban music world. The immersion will be underpinned by an itinerary of bartending seminars, exploring modern bartending trends and the evolution of classic cocktails, and a visit to the Havana Club distillery in order to prepare the contestants for the two-day, competitive final. The proceedings will be judged by a jury the world’s leading rum authorities, headed by Anistatia Miller.
Nick Blacknell, International Marketing Director of Havana Club, comments: “The cultural revolution in Cuba is the most exciting place to be in the world right now – it’s a melting pot of tradition and authenticity with a modern outlook like we have never seen before. With the Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix, we want to show modern Havana to the world through new, authentic ways to enjoy Cuban rum and inspire others to explore Cuba themselves.
“We look forward to welcoming the next generation of world-class mixologists to Havana, just as we have done for more than 20 years because there is no better place for them to find the inspiration they need to create the ultimate Cuba Moderna cocktail that truly reflects the important cultural evolution we are witnessing. Good luck to all of the bartenders competing and see you in Havana!”
