When we ask people what they know about Cachaça we’re usually greeted by a blank response but it is the key ingredient in the national drink of Brazil, the Caipirinha, celebrated on our shores for a long time. The spirit at the heart of this cocktail is less well known in the UK, in Brazil it’s a very different story. They’ve been drinking it by the barrel load since 1600’s and now consume around a billion litres per year.

The 40th Anniversary 

July 31st 2010 is a special day.  A Saturday to some – which is special enough in most people’s eyes, but to those of a British Royal Naval or rum fan persuasion – it marks the anniversary of Black Tot day.  A couple of months ago I wrote about a rather special way of marking the celebration, that was going to take place.  The Royal Navy’s final consignment of rum, brought out of storage and bottled for the delight of the rum fan the world over...
