This lightly coloured rum is packed with flavour and typically Spanish in style: it’s got the unmistakable flavour notes of the aguardientes that form part of the blend and bring the whizz to your cocktail.
So what is the La Bodeguita del Medio? Well its one of the more famous bars in Havana, famed for being one of the two bars mentioned in the Earnest Hemmingway quote: "My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita" – no surprises then that La B del M is the place to go for a mojito then!
We visited La Bodeguita del Medio several times during our trip and were a little disappointed that the majority of tourists rushed in – downed a mojito and rushed off after taking a few photo’s… Some didn’t even stay for the drink! Given the production line basis in which hundreds of mojito’s are made and served, it’s no wonder that the quality wasn’t as good as you could get in other bars are Havana, but there really was something special about being there, the live band playing just a few feet away from you. It's a place just as popular with the Habaneros as with the tourists – we recommend you wait for a moment and between batches of tourists – grab a barstool, a mojito and spend an hour or so just taking the whole vibel in.
The Cuban mojito is different enough from the sort of one you’d be served in a bar in London (for example) as there tends to be less ice and more soda water. Some bars add a dash of Angostura bitters (an addition I really like) and a common feature is the forest of mint rather than a few leaves. One thing for certain is that the Havana Club 3 Year Old really shines through!
Havana Club 3 Años is the result of blending aged and aromatic sugarcane aguardientes with extra light sugarcane distillates to produce a selection of young rums. This batch of rums is then allowed to rest in white oak barrels after which the Maestro Ronero chooses the best barrels and blends the final three-year-old rum, which is again set to rest, then filtered and bottled.
Havana Club 3 Años has a pleasant "light straw" colour and is bright, clear and dense, thereby revealing its age.
Havana Club 3 Años has an intense nose with accents of vanilla, caramelised pears, banana and hints of smoked oak.
A very pleasant palate, with smoky, vanilla and chocolate notes.
Havana Club Añejo 3 Años is the ideal ingredient for all premium cocktails, such as the Cuban Daiquirí as served at the legendary Floridita in Havana. It is slightly drier than Añejo Blanco and can also be enjoyed neat or over ice by rum connoisseurs.
If you can find a way of getting through the various checks etc. on the Havana Club website – check out the Cocktail Heritage section http://www.havana-club.com/en/int/havana-cocktail-capital for a really interesting history of the Cantinero (Cuban Bartender) and watch the mojitos being made in large quantities at La Bodeguita del Medio.
