The Search Is Over...
The competition has run its course; the entries have been trawled through. The ‘tough but fun’ job of mixing and tasting the submissions is over, shortlists made and whittled down... and so finally... We are pleased to say we have a winner!
I’m a little humbled to tell the truth. The internet is a big place, but it’s pretty wonderful feeling when you get an email from someone from some far flung place, writing to tell you about their great cocktail! There were a number of high quality entrants, some so very simple and some that were crafted from specially prepared ingredients. Many playing up on the ‘float’ part of the title and some connecting really rather well with ‘Britishness’. A particular favourite making the strong connection of the love of cricket that both the UK and Caribbean share.
The winner? Well that honour falls to Adam Kanter of The Rum Bar, in Philadelphia. Adam has already been announced as being RumConnection.com’s winner and I can assure you that no tricky or favouritism has taken place. Adam’s drink for us presented the right level of simplicity – the sort of drink you can knock up in a few moments when you get home from work, with the taste and look that's jsut right. A floating lime shell came up many times, but inside out – filled with overproof – pretty cool! Well done Adam.
We’ve since found out that Adam was so pleased with the drink, that he’s added it to the summer menu of Rum Bar. So if you’re stateside and looking for a great place to enjoy rum – you probably on your way to Rum Bar anyway. But while you’re there, why not order one for yourself and If you can’t wait to be served one by the master – here’s the recipe so you can make one for yourself! We’d love it if you let us know what you think!
1 oz Bacardi Superior
1/2 oz Creme de Banana
1/2 oz Orange Curacao
2 oz Cranberry Juice
1/2 oz Lime Juice
Shake and strain over fresh ice. Float with Whaler's Dark Rum. Pour 151 (overproof rum) into inside-out lime cup and light it up! (Be sure to blow out before adding straw)
It’s a drink that just about everyone should be able to get the ingredients without too much bother and so armed with nothing more than a three part shaker you can be a mixologist in your own home!
So with our congratulations going to Paul Etter, creator of the Rum Dood drink and our heartfelt thanks to all those who entered, as well as a double round of applause to Adam, TheFloatingRumShack.com is now going to settle back for the night with a namesake drink...
