Stolen Rum: Premium Aged White
TheFloatingRumShack.com recently wrote about Stolen Rum. And just a couple of days later received a very generous gift of a bottle of their Premium Aged White Rum all the way from New Zealand. So what else could TFRS do? ...well drink it of course!
It’s well known that we are people of simple tastes and are more interested in bringing ‘rum’ news to the good people of the UK! But the team behind Stolen Rum particularly wanted to hear our opinion of the white rum and so Pauline and I set about putting it through its paces in the only way we know how.
We made daiquiris that we loved and mojito’s which we loved and a mojito to the variant recipe supplied helpfully tied to the neck of the bottle and detailed below (which we also loved). I did say we were people of simple tastes...

Lovely as the drinks were (and after a few) Pauline and I were particularly happy – It’s obvious that whilst it’s a lovely rum to work with, why would someone go out of their way to lay their hands on a bottle when I imagine a bottle of Bacardi would be easier. With this in mind – I’ve tried to think of a few good points that make Stolen White Rum stand out. Before we start on those (however), let’s start with the basics ... What does the rum taste like?
I’m always comparing any other white rum to Bacardi Superior. Why? Well they (Bacardi) are the market leaders based on volume sales, which means they are doing something right and more often than not Bacardi scores well in blind taste tests.
Stolen Rum is sufficiently different to ensure you won’t mistake one for another. Whereas Bacardi has the light citrus notes you would expect from Spanish style rum the Stolen Rum is a little heavier and reflection the fact that it is of Trinidadian heritage. That said this is still a light dry white rum that is going to be best used with a mixer or in a cocktail.
While writing this I’ve drunk a fair bit neat and I would agree with the official tasting notes that this is a rum that could be sipped neat, but this isn’t where it works best for me. Of course if you want to appreciate the finer points of the nose and taste, then this is only way you’ll get them as they will perhaps get a little lost in a cocktail, although I believe they will compliment your drink nicely. Please don’t drown this lovely rum in coke!
Technical points – it’s a white rum that has been made from fermented and distilled molasses, aged for two years and then carbon filtered to produce the exceptionally clear spirit we are enjoying right now.
So why would you be advised to lay hands on this rum if you have a chance?
Looks! The bottle and imagery are fantastic. It will look great on your shelf and stand out to your guests.
And...
Story! Having noticed the bottle – Conversation can easily be had around the rum running past that the guy’s wanted to invoke with this great rum! The story was covered in more detail in the original article.
The fact that you’ll be helping a rum revival and a fledgling company along is a bonus. This is just the sort of brand that will take the ‘style over substance’ vodkas on and prove that with rum, there is always a substance to back up the style – it’s got mouth and trousers you might say!
We are certainly looking forward to the gold rum – if it’s as nice as the white, then we will be in for a proper treat. As we go to print – the gold appears to have just been launched in New Zealand.
By the way – I would have never thought that international couriers could ever of have managed to deliver a glass bottle half way around the world in nothing more than a padded envelope! But they did – So congrats to them for not delivering a wet padded envelope filled with broken glass!
